What to Do in the Kitchen Garden in January
If I told you that you should be thinking about your garden right now in the middle of winter, would you be surprised? Here in the DMV area, we can start planting as early as February. So if you want a spring garden full of lettuce, dill, carrots, onions, and cabbage, you really should be planning for it now.
You may not be out in the garden every day, but there is plenty you can do in January that will set you and your garden up for success all year long.
January Checklist for the Kitchen Garden
Here’s what you can do in the garden this January:
Plan your 2025 garden. Scan your fridge, grocery list, and go-to meals for foods you can grow in the garden. Take that list and match it to our growing seasons. Then, it’s time to sketch a plan for your garden space. You can create your garden plan following these 5 steps. If you still need to build your garden, spend this month conducting a site analysis, planning your garden layout, and preparing to install it.
Start seeds indoors. I’m doing it this weekend! There’s something really hopeful about starting a bunch of tender, green seedlings in the dead cold of winter. Spring will be here before we know it.
Prepare your garden beds. When you need a little fresh air (and the snow has melted), step out into your garden space to clear debris, remove plants that did not make it through the winter, and add a thick layer of fresh compost. This will get your garden ready for planting… next month!
